Greenhouse Gardening with Cold Frames
The idea of gardening with greenhouses sounds great. After all, who would not want pretty flowers and fresh vegetables as close as their backyard? People usually think they will have to have big spaces and expensive materials in order to have one. The more you research, however, the more you see that that is not actually the case.
Cold frames are small greenhouses that are often no bigger than a cooler that you bring to the beach. These small garden structures help extend your growing season, and they protect your seedlings from the wind and elements. The key to using a cold frame correctly is to know what it can and cannot do. In fact, often they are used in conjunction with a “hot” greenhouse. That way, seedlings are ready once the planting season begins. I’ll give you two ways to use a cold frame. As I’ve mentioned, people often have them near their larger greenhouses to provide a next step before their seedlings go to ground. This process is called “hardening off”. This process is essentially acclimatising a young plant that has been grown in a “warm” greenhouse to cooler, harsher weather. Of course, the name cold frame itself comes from being the opposite of a heated, warmed greenhouse.
Another way to use a cold frame is as a stand alone “mini” greenhouse. These small garden structures can be a permanent home for plants that are able to stand up to cold weather. Many people will use these for their hardy vegetables that need to be harvested in the fall and winter months. One reason people really like their cold frame is they can grow a large variety of crops year round. Some of these include lettuce, parsley and spinach. Take your gardening to the next level with a cold frame. You grocery bill will drop, and your love of gardening will increase.
